Sinterklaas and Piet Make-up

Make-up is essential for a good Sinterklaas celebration. This category naturally includes Piet make-up, but also make-up for Sinterklaas himself. If you use a good beard and eyebrows for Sinterklaas, we recommend using little make-up; a slight accentuation of the lines is often sufficient. However, good beard adhesive is of course important. Kryolan's beard adhesive is excellent and highly recommended. For the Piets, Kryolan's light brown make-up is recommended, but if you want something darker, Kryolan's dark brown Aqua 102 is also suitable, and black is also an option. Do not apply any grease to the face beforehand and use little water when applying. Application can be done with a sponge and/or brush. Tip: make Zwarte Piet's eyebrows darker for a natural look.

Which Piet make-up should I use?

We have Kryolan Piet make-up in 3 basic colours, namely light brown, dark brown and black. It is up to each person which colour you want to give Piet, this can also be soot smudges, for which the aforementioned colours are also suitable. The most commonly used colour for make-up nowadays is the light-brown make-up from Kryolan no. 101. The advantage of a light brown colour is that facial expressions remain clearly visible and it comes across as friendlier than a very dark colour. The disadvantage is that your face remains clearly visible, making you more recognizable. An intermediate solution is Kryolan 102. The advantage of water-based make-up is that it is very easy to work with. Kryolan make-up adheres excellently to dry skin, stays on well, and is also easy to remove. Nowadays, most Piets are made up as soot-smudged Piets; for this, we have a special Grimas set with a light brown base, the W8 cake make-up.

How do I apply the make-up?

It is important that the skin is dry, so no Nivea or other greasy products on your skin, as these will repel the make-up and it will not adhere. Use little water and apply the make-up with a brush and/or a sponge; a sponge works faster as you cover larger areas at once. For the ears, eyes, and around the mouth, a brush works perfectly. Kryolan brushes are of excellent quality. Make sure you have enough sponges in stock. If you don't use too much water, you will get a nice matte colour. People sometimes think of a glossy colour due to the name water-based make-up, but that is a misconception.

Make-up for Sinterklaas

We also have a very nice make-up set for Sinterklaas with several colours. This set also contains a kind of skin colour, which, when applied, gives a somewhat older look, making the skin less smooth. Don't use too much white for Sinterklaas. A mistake many people make is using too much make-up for Sinterklaas; do this subtly, don't overdo it.

Using cosmetic pencils for Sinterklaas and Piet

To highlight the edges, you can use cosmetic pencils, especially for the eyes, lips, and eyebrows. The edges of the eyes can also be perfectly worked with a black eyeliner pencil. If you use brown make-up or create a soot-smudged Piet, it looks very nice to make the eyebrows black. The white pencil can be used for Sinterklaas; with it, you can whiten or touch up the eyebrows, among other things.

Beard glue and beard glue remover or adhesive remover

It is important that Sinterklaas's beard is properly glued. Kryolan's beard glue is perfect for this; it adheres excellently to dry skin. The glue is available in a 12 ml and a 50 ml bottle. The advantage of the larger bottle is that it also comes with a larger brush, which easily spreads the glue where you want it. Be careful not to spill glue into the beard itself.

Once the beard is properly glued and needs to be removed after the performance, it is good to use the adhesive remover to clean the beard, wig, mustache, and eyebrows. You can clean the edges with a brush or sponge. The face can be cleaned with All Pur Remover Cream, which is gentle on the skin and works excellently. Hydro Remover Cream also works great.
